Apprentices

The Williamsport Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee is a non-profit organization offering Electrician Apprenticeships for the Construction Industry. We offer classroom instruction and on job training for individuals interested in a career as an electrician. Our committee offers these opportunities on an as needed basis.

We offer National Curriculum with standardized course materials and testing. The program is jointly administered by the Penn-Del-Jersey Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 812. Tuition for the program is deferred provided participants comply with the terms of our Scholarship Loan Agreement. Apprentices are given opportunities to earn industry standard wages while learning a trade.

Facts about the Williamsport Joint Apprenticeship Program

  • The program consists of 900 hours of classroom instruction and 8000 hours of on-the-job training (OJT).
  • Classroom instruction consists of 180 hours per year for five years.
  • Classes are held at the IBEW Local Union 812 union hall on weeknights and some Saturdays. A typical school year runs Sept. thru May.
  • The first 2000 hours of OJT are considered a probationary period.
  • Pay raises are based on hours worked. You will receive 5 (five) pay raises during the 8000 hours
  • The Williamsport Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee works to place apprentices with contractors who are signatory to IBEW Local Union 812. Since the construction market varies at times, year-round employment cannot be guaranteed.
  • The Williamsport Joint Apprenticeship Training Program is approved by the Pennsylvania Apprenticeship and Training Council and the Federal Committee on Apprenticeship.
  • Apprentice wages are based on a percentage of Journeyman Wireman wages. All benefits are based on hourly contributions made as part of your hourly wages.
  • Apprentices will be referred to contractors working within the jurisdiction of IBEW Local Union 812 (Lycoming, Clinton, Potter, Tioga counties and parts of Union, Northumberland, Bradford, Sullivan and Centre counties)
  • You must be 18 years of age to accept an apprenticeship (17 to apply). You must be a High School Graduate or have a GED or an Associates Degree. Applicants must have a valid PA Drivers License and must have successfully completed one full credit of High School Algebra.

The Williamsport Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee accepts
applications for Electrician Apprentices every Friday from 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM and from 1:00 PM – 4:30 PM. Applications are available at: 500 Jordan Avenue, Montoursville, PA   17754 and must be completed on site.  Applicants are encouraged to call 570-368-8984 prior to coming to apply.

The Application Process Involves 3 Steps:

  1. Completion of application which includes the provision of: Drivers License, Social Security Card, Work History, High School, GED, or College Transcripts, showing successful completion of 1 full year of Algebra with a passing grade.
  2. Electrical Trades Aptitude Test administered by the committee. (a score of ‘4’ or higher must be achieved to qualify for an interview)
  3. Interview with the Williamsport Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee

Applicants Must Meet the Following Qualifications:

  1. Be a minimum of 17 years of age.
  2. Be at least a high school graduate, or have a GED, or have a two-year Associate Degree or higher.
  3. Show evidence of successful completion of: one full year of high school algebra with a passing grade, or one post high school algebra course with a passing grade.
  4.  Provide an official transcript for high school and post high school education and training.  All GED records must be submitted if applicable.
  5. Submit a DD-214 to verify military training and/or experience if they are a veteran and wish to receive consideration for such training/experience.
  6. Qualify for interview using the electrical trade’s aptitude test developed and validated by the American Institutes of Research.
  7. Present evidence that they possess a valid driver’s license.
  8. Prior to being indentured, applicants selected from the pool of interviewed applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  9. Prior to being indentured, applicants selected from the pool of interviewed applicants may be required to provide results of physical examination and a drug test as decided by the JATC.
  10. Individuals who can verify (proper documentation required) that they have worked a minimum of eight thousand (8000) hours specifically in the electrical construction trade; do not need to meet the requirements of Items (B.) and (C.).
  11. Individuals who have worked a minimum of forty-five hundred (4500) hours as a residential wireman under an IBEW/NECA Local Collective Bargaining Agreement (proper documentation required), do not need to meet the requirements of Items (B.) and (C.).
  12. Individuals who have e completed at least 3 years of related instruction and forty-five hundred (4500) OJT as indentured apprentices in a properly registered electrical construction apprenticeship program not sponsored by IBEW/NECA (proper documentation required), do not need to meet the requirements of Items (B.) and (C.).
  13. Applicants must live within the jurisdiction of the Williamsport JATC (see attachments).
